Data Removal Services Compared: A Practical Buying Guide

By ProtectMyData Editorial8 min read

Key takeaways

  • The best service for you is the one whose eligible plan covers your priority sites, fits your budget and provides the evidence you need.
  • Compare annual totals for the same person and term, not a monthly equivalent against a monthly subscription.
  • Provider-advertised coverage is not independently verified performance. Automated and custom coverage are different.
  • ProtectMyData publishes this commercially interested guide. Providers are not ranked and no hands-on test was performed.

Our disclosure and selection method

Published by ProtectMyData Editorial. ProtectMyData sells a paid privacy service and has a commercial interest in this subject. This is our source-based buying guide, not independent journalism or a hands-on product test. We have not measured comparative removal success, speed or customer satisfaction. Provider order is not a ranking or endorsement.

Sources checked 12 October 2026. Dollar comparisons below use USD, individual US-facing annual offers, unless another term is stated. Annual totals are charged for the year; monthly equivalents are not monthly instalments. Taxes, location, checkout eligibility, promotions and renewal terms can change the amount paid. Confirm the final terms on the provider's official page before buying.

This is a bounded shortlist of Incogni, DeleteMe, Optery and ProtectMyData, not a census of every privacy product. We selected services with public official consumer plan information that readers can inspect. Criteria are eligible market, total cost, routine versus custom scope, reporting, personal-information requirements and repeat work. There are no numerical scores, stars, weighted league tables or paid placement claims. We do not award an overall winner.

First decide what problem you are paying to solve

If a few known people-search listings are the problem, direct opt-outs may be enough to start. The FTC describes individual opt-outs as free and paid services as a way to delegate that work. If you need continuing help across multiple supported sites, compare what recurring requests and reporting the plan actually includes.

Credit monitoring, account recovery, broker removals and search-result removal are not interchangeable. Do not pay for a broader bundle assuming it performs a particular removal task. Start with the exact source URL you want addressed and ask whether that plan handles it.

Annual prices and what those offers describe

Incogni Standard lists $95.88 USD annually, with automated removals and recurring requests. Unlimited lists $179.88 USD annually and adds unlimited custom requests and phone support. Its separate homepage introductory prices were not used as recurring prices. Source: Incogni pricing and homepage, checked 12 October 2026.

DeleteMe's one-person US Standard is $129 USD annually. The page lists custom requests plus automated services, a Personal DeleteMe Expert and Quarterly Privacy Reports. Its $209 two-year individual offer has a different term and is not used as a one-year comparison. Source: DeleteMe pricing, checked 12 October 2026.

Optery's US pricing page lists Core at $39 billed yearly, Extended at $149 yearly and Ultimate at $249 yearly. Core describes monthly automated scans and removals, with one name, city and state per user for removals. Extended adds a human Privacy Agent and reports with before-and-after screenshots about every 90 days. Ultimate lists custom requests eligible after 30 days. The displayed FALL2026 promotional code is excluded from these base annual figures. Source: Optery US pricing, checked 12 October 2026.

ProtectMyData's official product facts list Basic at $83.88 USD annually and Pro at $167.88 USD annually, before applicable tax. All paid plans include recurring broker checks and supported re-removal; Pro and Family Pro include dark-web monitoring and unlimited custom requests. Basic does not acquire Pro features merely because they appear elsewhere on a pricing page. Source: ProtectMyData product facts, checked 12 October 2026.

Why coverage totals cannot choose the winner

Incogni advertises 420+ automated broker sites, with 3,000+ additional custom-removal sites on Unlimited. Optery Core advertises 380+ sites with Expanded Reach enabled, or 150+ without it. Those conditional Core counts cannot be treated as its unconditional network size. Source: respective official pricing pages, checked 12 October 2026.

A comparable routine-coverage count for DeleteMe Standard was not established in the reviewed source. We also avoid using ProtectMyData's directory size as proof of personal removal outcomes. A directory entry, a supported request route and a confirmed removal are different things.

Check whether your particular site is covered automatically, only on a custom tier, subject to extra conditions or not covered. Do not sum custom and routine lists to produce a misleading head-to-head count. We have not independently audited any provider's full site inventory.

Choose by documented fit, not by a fabricated ranking

For low annual cost and a constrained automated profile, Optery Core merits checking, provided its identity limits and Expanded Reach conditions suit you. For automated requests with a documented monthly subscription option, review Incogni Standard. For a listed personal expert and custom requests, review DeleteMe Standard. For PMD's recurring broker removal with optional Pro privacy tools, review our Basic and Pro scope and limitations. These suggestions follow the cited plan descriptions, not comparative success data.

For unsupported sites, compare Incogni Unlimited, the custom requests listed by DeleteMe, Optery Ultimate's 30-day eligibility condition and PMD Pro's scope. Ask about your exact URL before assuming a custom request will succeed. If free self-service is enough, Optery Free Basic describes reports and self-service removal tools, not the same delegated removals as its paid plans.

Check your market, renewal and data handling

The DeleteMe offers and Optery table here use their US pages; Optery links to separate Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa pricing pages. Incogni lists its supported countries on its pricing page and restricts Protect to the US. PMD product facts confirm Australian eligibility and USD, EUR and GBP prices, not AUD. This is not a promise that every plan or site is supported in every country.

Read privacy notices for the identifiers needed to find matching records, retention and deletion choices. Check the cancellation date, full renewal price and whether a refund applies to the initial purchase or later charges. PMD terms permit an initial-purchase refund request within 30 days, subject to support review, and cancellation takes effect at the current period's end. Competitor refund and privacy terms have not been compared in full here, so they remain questions to verify, not assumed equivalents.

What this guide does not establish

We have not measured percentage removed, time saved, speed, long-term relisting or support satisfaction. A cheaper plan is not proven less effective, and a larger advertised count is not proven better. We do not reuse customer ratings as if they were our test results.

The FTC notes that people-search opt-outs do not erase government public records and that records may reappear. Read any provider's limitation statements and keep a record of your own checked outcomes. A subscription is not a guarantee that personal information disappears everywhere.

Evidence boundaries and freshness

Official sources below were checked on 12 October 2026. Provider statements describe plans, not independently tested results. Material price and feature statements identify their source in the article or comparison table.

Unknown means the reviewed evidence did not establish the detail, not that a provider lacks it. Confirm current terms before deciding. This guide does not require an exposure lookup or purchase.

Use the same buying checklist for every service

  1. Start with a list of actual source URLs rather than a presumed exposure count.
  2. Check eligibility, identities included and the plan's named supported sites.
  3. Write down annual total, any introductory charge, renewal total and applicable taxes.
  4. Ask what reports distinguish detected listings, submitted requests and confirmed outcomes.
  5. Read the privacy notice and cancellation terms. Keep a copy of the offer you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best data removal service?

This guide does not award an overall winner. Compare your sites, eligible country, identifiers, cost, custom-request needs and reporting against the official plan. No comparative effectiveness test was performed.

Are all monthly figures monthly subscriptions?

No. Annual pages often divide the annual total by twelve. Use the actual billing term and total, not just the displayed monthly equivalent.

Is ProtectMyData an independent reviewer?

No. ProtectMyData publishes this guide and sells a competing service. Its commercial interest is disclosed, and its plan is evaluated using the same documented-fit criteria.
